What does it mean to have faith in Jesus Christ?

In order for our faith to lead to salvation, it must be centered in the Lord Jesus Christ. To have faith in Jesus Christ means to trust Him and obey His commandments. Faith is much more than passive belief. We express our faith through action—by the way we live.

Young Women: We had a great stake conference and than ward conference with so many wonderful leaders to guide and direct us.
Please take a moment to think about the title of this lesson: What does it mean to have faith in Jesus Christ?  Come with your ideas and share what your thoughts are on this.

Sister Sperry (& Sister Wakefield who will be team teaching with Molly for me)

Why do I need to forgive others?
"The Atonement is the most important doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and a correct understanding of it is the most important knowledge anyone can gain in their life. Many people have a belief in Christ, but don’t fully understand the extent of Christ’s sacrifice, Christ died so that everybody on earth could live again, and not suffer the consequences of their sins. Christ offers us help in making correct decisions that we would never have the power to make otherwise."

Part of making correct decisions is the ability to forgive.  We will discuss the relationship of the atonement and forgiveness.  Please come prepared to share your thoughts and experiences on what you have learned about forgiveness and think of a time when forgiving someone has helped you feel peace and love?

Love you ALL - Sister Sperry

Lesson Review: Sunday March 3

Our lesson this past Sunday was on how the Atonement can help us in our trials. I talked about a talk from Elder Holland called "An High Priest of Good Things to Come." Sister King posted the Mormon Message that tells a story from that talk on her Facebook--I decided to post it here as well. It really is a wonderful message!

Please read this talk by Elder Bednar for Sunday: https://www.lds.org/liahona/2012/04/the-atonement-and-the-journey-of-mortality?lang=eng

The theme for March is the Atonement. It is such an important aspect of the gospel! Come ready to learn and share on Sunday and we will have a great lesson.

Love and pray for you all!

Young Sisters -Women!

Thanks for you participation today and for Suzie's incredible talk on the same thing.  Although we don't seek for these trials, we did agree to them and they can the refining fire to our beliefs and testimonies if we allow ourselves to learn from them. Let's try to remain humble so that we are always teachable - even when things are going great!

Here are the scriptures that we did not have time to get too:

Read some scriptures in which the Savior experienced adversity (such as Matthew 4:1–11; 26:38–39; Luke 23:33–34). What can the young women learn about adversity from the Savior’s life? How did He face His trials?

Here is the excerpt from the talk I wanted to share with you:

Elder Neil L. Andersen’s talk “Trial of Your Faith,

These fiery trials are designed to make you stronger, but they have the potential to diminish or even destroy your trust in the Son of God and to weaken your resolve to keep your promises to Him. These trials are often camouflaged, making them difficult to identify. They take root in our weaknesses, our vulnerabilities, our sensitivities, or in those things that matter most to us. A real but manageable test for one can be a fiery trial for another.
How do you remain “steadfast and immovable”6 during a trial of faith? You immerse yourself in the very things that helped build your core of faith: you exercise faith in Christ, you pray, you ponder the scriptures, you repent, you keep the commandments, and you serve others.
When faced with a trial of faith—whatever you do, you don’t step away from the Church! Distancing yourself from the kingdom of God during a trial of faith is like leaving the safety of a secure storm cellar just as the tornado comes into view.
The Apostle Paul said, “Ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God.”7 It is within the sanctuary of the Church that we protect our faith. Meeting together with others who believe, we pray and find answers to our prayers; we worship through music, share testimony of the Savior, serve one another, and feel the Spirit of the Lord. We partake of the sacrament, receive the blessings of the priesthood, and attend the temple. The Lord declared, “In the ordinances … , the power of godliness is manifest.”8 When you are faced with a test of faith, stay within the safety and security of the household of God. There is always a place for you here. No trial is so large we can’t overcome it together.9

Please know that your Heavenly Father is aware of you and loves you.  We as your leaders do too!

Why do we have adversity?

As part of Heavenly Father’s plan, we must experience adversity during mortality. In some cases, adversity comes as the result of our own poor choices or the choices of others. Other trials are simply a natural part of our mortal experience. Though they are difficult, our challenges can help us grow spiritually and become more like Jesus Christ.
Please think of some of your trials and how you overcame them.  We want to talk about real trials you are having, why we  have them (from our own decisions or just part of life) and how can can avoid some and overcome others.  We want you to do the talking!

Thanks - Sister Sperry

Lesson Sunday February 10, 2013

Topic: Why should I treat my body like a temple?

This last Sunday we talked about the plan of salvation and where we were before we were born to this earth and received a body. This next Sunday we're going to talk a little bit about the sacredness of our bodies.

In 1 Corinthians 6 it says:

19 What? know ye not that your abody is the btemple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not yourcown?
20 For ye are abought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

I want you to be thinking about this concept. Think about what it means to you. Keep the topic question in your mind and before coming to class on Sunday please read the talk "The Sanctity of the Body" by Sister Tanner.

I hope you all have a wonderful week!

Lesson Sunday Feb. 3, 2013

The Mia Maids presidency have chosen for your lesson this week the topic below.  We will also want to talk about "The Plan of Salvation" that is the topic for the entire month and also goes hand in hand with this lesson.

What happened in my premortal life?

Before we were born, we lived with Heavenly Father as His spirit children. In the Council in Heaven, the Father presented to us His plan of salvation, and Jesus Christ was chosen to be our Savior. Satan sought to amend the plan, taking away our agency, and he and his followers were cast out. We accepted our Father’s plan and chose to follow Jesus Christ.

Thought Question: How can understanding your premortal life influence you to make righteous choices in this life?  What choices would you possibly make if you did not know the Plan of Salvation?

See you Sunday!!
Love,
Sister Sperry

Lesson Sunday Jan. 27, 2013

We will have Joint Young Women's this Sunday.

Here is the topic.

What are the roles of the Holy Ghost?

The Holy Ghost, a member of the Godhead, bears witness of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. He is the source of personal testimony and revelation. He can guide us in our decisions and protect us from physical and spiritual danger. He is known as the Comforter, and He can calm our fears and fill us with hope. Through His power, we are sanctified as we repent, receive saving ordinances, and keep our covenants. It is through the influence of the Holy Ghost that we receive knowledge of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ and feel Their power, goodness, and love.

I know that Sister Hutchings sent all of you a card.  She wants you to know that only those who want to volunteer to share their thoughts will be asked.  Those who do not feel comfortable to do so will not need too.

Please take the time to read her card and go through all the questions and thoughts so that you will be spiritually prepared to listen to the lesson.

Thank you!!

Review for Who Am I and Who Can I Become:

We were small in numbers today with the 3 day weekend holiday, but strong in Spirit!

I forgot to challenge all of us to look for Divine Qualities in someone in your family and SHARE it with them. You could share on the blog just that you did it or any other comment!

Pres. Hinckley said: "You are second to NONE, you are daughters of God"

Here is the link to one of the videos that we saw today.  I would suggest you watch it again and also look at the "how they made it" video.  This was done by your peers in South Jordan - pretty cool.

Have a great week and know that we Love you!!

Lesson for January 20, 2013

1.17.13

Who am I, and who can I become?

Please ask yourselves these two questions:
1-What does it mean to you to be a daughter of God?
2-How does knowing you are a daughter of God bless you and influence the decisions you make?

Be prepared to talk about these questions and come with experiences and your own.

These scriptures and talks will help you:

Genesis 1:26–27 (We are created in the image of God)
Psalm 82:6; Moses 1:39; Abraham 3:22–26 (Our divine potential is to inherit eternal life)
Luke 15:4–6, 11–32; John 3:16; D&C 18:10–15 (The worth of a soul is great)
Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “You Matter to Him,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2011, 19–22

Don't forget to bring your scriptures and be prepared to be part of the lesson!

Lesson for January 13

Topic this Sunday: "Why is Jesus Christ important in my life?"

Please read the talk by Elder Dallin H. Oaks titled, "Teachings of Jesus" you can find that by clicking here. (Remember you could also watch or listen to it as well!)

Think about your own answer to why Jesus Christ is important in your life and come to class on Sunday ready to discuss the talk. Write down any questions or ideas you have and we'll talk about it in class!

Review from Sunday, January 6th.

Topic last Sunday: "How can I know my Heavenly Father?"

We had a wonderful discussion about our Heavenly Father. We talked a lot about having a personal relationship with Him and the importance of prayer--our easiest form of communication.

There are a couple of scriptures I didn't get to share on Sunday that I would like you to think about:

First from 1 John 4: 7-8

7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

And from Mosiah 4:

11 And again I say unto you as I have said before, that as ye have come to the knowledge of the glory of God, or if ye have known of his goodness and have tasted of his love, and have received a remission of your sins, which causeth such exceedingly great joy in your souls, even so I would that ye should remember, and always retain in remembrance, the greatness of God, and your own nothingness, and his goodness and long-suffering towards you, unworthy creatures, and humble yourselves even in the depths of humility, calling on the name of the Lord daily, and standing steadfastly in the faith of that which is to come, which was spoken by the mouth of the angel.
12 And behold, I say unto you that if ye do this ye shall always rejoice, and be filled with the love of God, and always retain a remission of your sins; and ye shall grow in the knowledge of the glory of him that created you, or in the knowledge of that which is just and true.

The beauty of these words fill me with all kinds of goodness. So please ponder on them and think about your own relationship with Heavenly Father. And realize that sometimes it is most important to remember that above all else--God is love.

Welcome to the new Mia Maid blog!

My dear Mia Maids of the Edgewood Ward,

Thank you for visiting this new class blog. First, I want to say that there are so many wonderful things about this year's Come, Follow Me curriculum. One of the best things about it, is the opportunity to grow as both a class and an individual. I hope that each week we can become spiritually more aware and willing to contribute to the discussions we have in Young Women's. This blog will be the place you come to find out what our lesson topics will be each week and what you can read or study to better prepare for each lesson.

I ask that you take the opportunity to visit this blog at least every week, maybe even more than once a week to be reminded of study materials and be strengthened by these wonderful resources. I also ask that you do the following things:

  • Read the scriptures, talks, and quotes that are posted here.
  • Watch the videos that may be linked.
  • Write down any questions or thoughts you have.
  • Apply the topics to your life.
  • Come prepared on Sundays to share with all of us.

As you do each of these things I know that your faith in the gospel will grow and your love for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will become even stronger. Our goal here is to follow in Christ's footsteps. He is our greatest example and as we strive to be more like Him, our lives will improve. Remember! We're all learning here, so there will be some changes from time to time to see what works best for everyone.

Lots of love and prayers to you all,

Sister Larsen (or just Molly Jane :)
